Kathleen C. Vogt

Kathleen C. Vogt served as director of bands at Sangaree Middle School since it opened in 2004 until her retirement in 2012. The band students participated in beginner and junior All County Honors Bands and all the SCBDA events, earning the Outstanding Performance Award for 8 consecutive years.

From 1984 to 2004, Miss Vogt was the band and performing arts director at Hanahan High School. Under her direction, the bands consistently excelled in all facets of the band medium. The Hanahan Marching Pride had been named AA State Champions for 4 years and AA Lower State Champions for 11 years (10 consecutive years). The Concert Band received numerous superior ratings at concert festivals, and students earned chairs in Honor Bands at the county, regional, and state levels. The Hanahan Bands had been presented the Outstanding Performance Award each of the 20 years during Miss Vogt’s tenure. 

Prior to her position at Hanahan High School, Miss Vogt taught instrumental and choral music in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, for 11 years. She attended Duquesne University, earning the Bachelor of Music Education Summa Cum Laude in 1973 and the Master of Music Education in 1975. She continued serving on the Music School faculty of Duquesne University for five years following her 2-year graduate teaching assistantship.

She was owner-operator of a dance studio and taught dance, guard, majorettes, and percussion at several high schools and summer camps. 

After moving to South Carolina, she continued teaching on the college level as an adjunct professor in the Music School at Charleston Southern University. Miss Vogt has performed with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, McKeesport Symphony Orchestra, and the Charleston Symphony Orchestra. She has also played percussion in the Charleston Opera Company productions, church cantatas, Dock Street Theatre, Charleston Community Band, Low Country Winds, and Charleston Winds, and is presently performing with the Southcoast Symphony. 

Miss Vogt has held membership in several professional organizations, including NAfME, SCMEA, SCBDA, ASBDA, NBA, BACME, Phi Beta Mu (Vice-President, President), and Pi Lambda Theta. She served on the SCBDA Marching Committee for 25 years and was the 2012 Site Coordinator for Lower State 1A/3A Marching Prelims. Hanahan High School was the site host for Region Band auditions, Berkeley All County Band auditions, clinics, and concerts, SCBDA Concert Festival, and Classic Festivals. She has also earned recognition as a National Board Certified Teacher. Miss Vogt was named Teacher of the Year for Hanahan High School in 1987 and Sangaree Middle School in 2008 and has been chosen for Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers, Outstanding Young Women in America, Who’s Who in America, and Who’s Who in the World. Miss Vogt is also a clinician with the World Champion Modernettes Baton Twirling Corps from Finleyville, Pennsylvania. This group has won over 50 National Championships (held at Notre Dame University) and, in each of the 8 qualifying years, represented the United States in an International Competition in Europe and won 8 gold medals and 2 silver. As a charter member, she was inducted into the National Baton Twirling Hall of Fame in 2002 (Janesville, Wisconsin). She has been active as a guest conductor, clinician, performer, and adjudicator in South Carolina and Pennsylvania.
